ABOUT ME

My research explores the dynamics between language, politics and media in the context of global Chinese diaspora. A particular focus is the language and identity of Cantonese, which is my mother tongue. I was born and raised in Hong Kong with a family history of diaspora. I am ultimately interested in interrogating how Cantoneseness can be articulated and reimaged when we look beyond geographical boundaries.
After earning my PhD from the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at the University of Southern California, I was a Dornsife Fellow at USC teaching general education classes of media and popular culture. Currently, I’m a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Comparative Media Studies and Writing at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, teaching and researching transnational Chinese media. |
